, we are excited to send you our brand new NWI Green Party newsletter - Crossroads.
In this time of national crisis the NWI Green Party asks you to stay safe and keep yourself healthy. Like most organizations we have shifted our routines as the necessity to social distance and not gather in groups for good of public health - and yes that means we too are going on Zoom for our next monthly meeting (see the information below). All events for this spring that we attend to share our green values have been canceled so we have been focused the past few weeks on how we connect with you. Our website www.nwigreenparty.org is under active development and more functionality, information and resources are being added daily. We are upgrading our newsletter for both easy signup via the webpage and easy unsubscribe (hopefully if you have made it this far you want to stay up to date about all the activities of your NWI Green Party, if not it's more likely you have already skipped to the bottom and hit the unsubscribe link). Look for many more improvements in communications, visibility and grassroots organization in the future. You are what makes Northwest Indiana the crossroads of Green america.

A Message from your NWI Green Party Chair
Hello and welcome to this newsletter of the Northwest Indiana Green Party, representing Greens in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties. We are an affiliated chapter of the Indiana Green Party, which is, in turn, an affiliate of the Green Party of the United States.
As the elected chair of the NWIGP for 2020, let me ask you: Are you as fed up as we are with the two-party system in which far too many Democrats and Republicans work for corporate cash, not the voters who elected them to serve the public interest?
Do you wonder, what choice do I have, when presented with the proposition of voting for the evil of two lessers?
We think we have the solution to the problem, a new party, one we’re building from the ground up.
We at the NWI Green Party and at the state and national levels, are organized around our 10 Key values, which I think for most of us are easily recognizable as American values.
We have long advocated building stronger, cleaner communities and a better country though compassionate interpersonal relationships, environmental stewardship, equal opportunity, civil rights, community organizing, education and political action.
We have long supported a national health insurance program, known now as Medicare for All. In 2006, we outlined and began advocating for a Green New Deal to ween us off fossil fuels and create millions of new jobs using clean, renewable energy.
Locally, in 2019, we made history when Green Party candidates Susan Brown, Michael Cooper and I ran for city council seats in Valparaiso, Portage and Hobart. It was the first time for all three communities in which a Green Party candidate petitioned and got their names on the ballot and ran in a November general election for local public office.
This is a time of tremendous economic, political and social turmoil. Today, simultaneously, we have three crises to contend with – climate change, the global COVIN-19 pandemic and the impending economic collapse it has initiated. Yet, our corrupt two-party system is showing on a daily basis how it is unable to rise to these challenges.
On March 24, economist Charles Gascon with the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis issued a report saying nearly 66.8 million Americans, or 46% of the U.S. workforce were employed at jobs such as food preparation, food serving and retail sales, deemed to be at “high risk” of layoffs due to the COVIN-19 virus.
More than 10 million Americans have filed unemployment claims in the last two weeks of March, jamming call centers and websites. Many of them will lose their employer-sponsored health insurance just when they might need it most.
And yet, members of the corporate-controlled U.S. Senate and House of Representatives have passed three bills in short order – mostly bailing out ailing corporations with trillions of dollars in aid programs while working people are being told to make do with no guaranteed healthcare and no guaranteed income and a one-time monthly payment that’s a mere pittance in comparison to their present and future economic losses.
After passing their so-called “relief” legislation, the House recessed and sent its members home for 3½ weeks while police, fire fighters, EMTs, nurses, doctors and a host of other essential employees continued – heroically – at their jobs.
We can and must do better.
Come join us.
