Willow Creek and the wetlands at US 6 and Swanson Road are endangered of being developed into a large scale commercial development. At the June 24th City of Portage Planning Commission meeting a lawyer for the property owner requested a 13 acre rezoning - and your NWI Green Party was there to speak against it! Since then we have mobilized an amazing grassroots effort that included canvasing of the residential neighborhood to the south and securing of letters against the development of the wetlands from major NWI and Indiana environmental groups. The calls against this development was so great that the Portage City Council tabled the first reading of the zoning change to a special meeting.
Join us at the July 21, 2020 special meeting of the Portage City Council at 6:30pm at Woodland Park in Portage to protect this important freshwater emergent wetland and freshwater forested wetland from being turned into a parking lot. These wetlands are important for protecting the water quality of Willow Creek before it meanders through Portage and into Lake Michigan. Help the NWI Green Party protect this watershed area and speak against the rezoning change. Contact Michael at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information or to let us know we can expect you on the 21st.
