From the Pen of Joe Conn,Chairperson NWI Green Party
The Green Party 100% supports gender equality, healthcare as a human right and a national health insurance system under Medicare for All.
As such, we join the nation in mourning the loss of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
Ginsburg was a role model for all Americans, but especially for women.
A fierce opponent of gender discrimination, having experienced it first hand both as a student and in her academic and professional life, she was an effective litigator for that cause with the American Civil Liberties Union, arguing six gender discrimination cases before the Supreme Court, winning five of them.
Sworn in to the Supreme Court in 1993, RBG throughout her tenure was a champion of many other progressive ideals, including healthcare as a human right.
Hers was one of five supportive votes in a 5-4 majority in 2012 to uphold the constitutionality of Obamacare. She was one of just two justices who dissented in a 7-2, pro-corporate decision this year that stripped away some womens’ rights to obtain payment for contraceptive coverage through their employer-sponsored health insurance under Obamacare if the employer asserts a religious objection to contraception.
The loss of Ginsburg could have dire consequences for the nation’s healthcare system, depending on her replacement.
Also this week, Democratic Party presidential nominee Joe Biden had some effective moments, harkening back to his Scranton, Pa., working-class upbringing at a recent "Town Hall" program on CNN.
But Joe Biden's performance had more sound than substance.
In one segment, for example, Biden declared that healthcare is "an absolute right."
However, he has repeatedly vowed, if elected president, to veto Medicare for All legislation now before the House and Senate, bills, if passed, would enable healthcare payment to become a right.
Today, healthcare is not a right, but merely a privilege, and only for an increasingly smaller and smaller percentage of Americans who can afford the soaring costs of health insurance and health care itself.
Biden has repeatedly vowed to "strengthen" Obamacare, the 13-year old law that has proven it can’t cover everyone.
As 2020 began, despite Obamacare’s alleged reforms, 30 million Americans still were left without any health insurance at all, and another 80 million were "under insured."
A person is classified as under insured if they have health insurance, but their plan is so crappy -- with out-of-pocket costs so high – they can't afford to seek care.
The result of the failure of Obamacare to cover everyone is 68,000 Americans die each year for lack of health insurance and another 500,000 Americans a year -- most of whom are insured -- file bankruptcy due to medical debt.
With the COVID-19 pandemic and recession, Obamacare -- which relies on employer-sponsored health insurance -- is proving even more unequal to the task.
The recession could push the ranks of the uninsured to 40 million, an analyst predicts.
COVID-19 has already infected 6.7 million Americans, killing 198,000 and leaving a growing number of those hit hardest with hospital bills as high as $1 million. https://www.seattletimes.com/seattle-news/inspiring-story-of-seattle-mans-coronavirus-survival-comes-with-a-1-1-million-dollar-hospital-bill/
Biden was confronted at the CNN town hall by a man who identified himself as a worker in a cancer center. He told the former vice-president that he makes less than $15 an hour and has taken out a credit card with a 25% interest rate "just to cover my groceries."
"I'm struggling not only mentally, but financially," Biden's questioner said. "As a middle class healthcare worker, do you have any plans to help us healthcare workers?"
Biden offered no plan on how to do that, however -- only an emotive response and a vague declaration that "we have to make sure that healthcare workers are paid and paid a decent wage."
We deserve better than Biden and Donald Trump, who has, after nearly four years, produced no national health insurance plan at all.
IN NATIONAL GREEN PARTY NEWS
Howie Hawkins and Angela Walker, the Green Party candidates for President of the United States and Vice President, assert healthcare is a human right, and they back it up with plan to ensure that right is protected.
They support Medicare for All as a first step, coupled with an expansion of the existing National Health Service, conducting “a national assessment of unmet healthcare needs, develops a plan to meet those needs (and) implements the plan.”
The Northwest Indiana Green Party has gone Hollywood.

Our first video is in the editing phase and should be premiering soon. Check out our Facebook and web pages for a premier date.
The NWI Green Party also wants to give a shout out to a group we know and respect, Just Transition NWI, which will host a free, virtual NWI premier of the documentary film “In The Water,” featuring a well-known Calumet Region polluter and local residents affected by the poisoning of their community.
The film was created by the Indiana Environmental Reporter. The screening will run Wednesday, Oct. 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will include a live Q & A panel with the filmmaker and other Indiana environmental experts.
