, we are only three weeks into the New Year and our nation has been pushed even closer to the brink of chaos when our nations' capital was attacked and our legislative branch locked down. Our hearts go out to those who suffered, sacrificed and held the line during this coordinated and sanctioned assault on the US Capital and the foundational processes that buffer up this democracy from tyranny. What we witnessed on live news and real-time social media should not have been a surprise, because it was the culmination of what has been happening in towns across the United States. In our own region far-right extremist have been embolden by local rallies and demonstrations. In Hobart a group of extremist disrupted a church service to dedicate their churches new BLM banner. In Portage, far-right extremist including a former Republican Mayor, crossed the street to accost women and children counter demonstrating against their hate and racism. The first lines crossed were in our localities, not our nation's capital. The first signs of this far-right insurrection were seen on our city streets, and not when the cameras zoomed in the mob marching from the podium where the president had just given the order. For those of us on the grassroots of democracy, we clearly saw this coming.
As we move into a time of healing of the damage done to our nation, the NWI Green Party sees the need to heal the damage done to our local communities by the extremist. Your NWI Green Party stands with you on the pillar of Democracy at the core of our party. The Green Party platform reminds us of need to keep vigilant in our actions to strengthen our democracy, as this passage from our national platform details.
The Green Party considers American democracy to be an ongoing, unfolding project that is dynamic and creative in nature. We are committed to the strengthening of our civil society, including the many mediating institutions at the community level that have always characterized our democracy. We seek to heal the alienation and apathy that has been cultivated in the citizenry by the power brokers of the status quo. Righteous anger about the crippling of our democracy is rising in the land, and the Greens offer constructive alternatives.
We are the constructive alternative for the future of our American democracy. right here in Northwest Indiana In the aftermath of this trying time of compounded crisis unaided by inept leadership our grassroots Green movement will work to make a difference right here in the region. Join us in this ongoing march of democracy.

A Message from your NWI Green Party Chair
We have been disabused, thus far, that 2021 will be better than 2020, but it still could be.Here’s a Green Party view of the state of the nation. At this writing, just 15 days into the New Year, rioters have overrun the Capitol Building. A Capitol Police officer shot one demonstrator dead under what’s emerging as questionable circumstances while other reports of police courage and restraint are mixed with those showing a lack of preparedness, retreat and even collaboration with demonstrators at certain locations. As a result of the riot, calls are rising for new criminal penalties for acts of so-called “domestic terrorism.”
Critics worry – and we do, too – these new laws could further impinge on civil liberties and, with the wrong person in power, be turned against those engaging in legitimate peaceful demonstrations in support of the environment, peace, nuclear arms control, etc. Our civics is so bad, nearly 30,000 armed guards – civil police and military – have been summoned to Washington, D.C., to secure the Jan. 20 inauguration and protect president-elect Joseph Biden and vice-president elect Kamala Harris.
The state of the nation is deeply troubled. But there is hope for greener new days ahead. It remains to be seen if the incoming administration can offer economic policies promoting the broader welfare of a majority of the American people instead of the narrow interests of corporations and the oligarchs who own them. Can Biden reverse the policies that he and fellow Democrats helped develop, policies that previous administrations and bi-partisan coalitions of Dems and Republicans in Congress supported, policies such as job-sucking trade agreements and tax cuts for the 1% that drove millions of frustrated poor and working class Americans to support a millionaire charlatan populist for President of the United States?
Meanwhile, the U.S., with its profit-driven healthcare system, leads the globe in misery from the COVID-19 pandemic. We’ve been ravaged by 23 million infections and nearly 400,000 deaths. https://coronavirus.jhu.edu/data/new-cases
We wish our incoming President, Joe Biden, all the luck in leading the federal government’s battle against COVID-19. His success will be the nation’s success.
We do support addressing the COVID-19 crisis with an all hands on deck approach, but we must do much more than take the weak tea prescribed by Democrats or Republicans for our debilitated healthcare system. Congress must pass Medicare for All legislation already pending in the House and Senate. That would bring a swift end to our costly and deadly for-profit health insurance system that kills 68,000 Americans every year – even before COVID-19. M4A would protect all COVID-19 patients, now and in the future, affording them both access to the best care available, and protecting them from medical bankruptcy with top-quality Medicare health insurance coverage with no co-pays, deductibles or hidden out-of-pocket expenses.
We are in favor of law and order – as long as prosecutors and police apply our laws to Wall Street Banksters and environmental criminals as well as the poor and the working class. We do not support posing additional threats to our already challenged civil liberties by adding a new layer of draconian anti-domestic terrorism laws.
We support peace while opposing needless, regime change wars so that global corporations obtain control over other peoples’ natural resources. We oppose squandering hundreds of billions of dollars a year on bloated Defense Department and “intelligence community” budgets and the militarization of our local police departments.
We are in favor of Biden’s call to relieve 43 million Americans from a groaning load of $1.6 trillion in student debt, but we want to relieve all of the debt, not just some it, as Biden has proposed, while keeping students in debt peonage for 20 to 25 more years. We also want to invest in America’s future through publicly funded higher education so no student ever again has go into hock for 20 or 30 years to attain their educational goals.
Locally, the NWI Green Party supports strong building and zoning laws – and their enforcement -- that protect our natural resources and environment and encourage and incentivize a just transition to renewable energy sources like solar and wind without the loss of good-paying union jobs in the old, dirty energy industries.
We support incentives to encourage investment in wind and solar and in the creation of new, good-paying jobs in renewable energy. We support net metering – paying a fair rate to home and business owners who’ve invested in solar systems that send their excess energy to the grid. We support the development of community based, locally owned micro-grids.
We support rigorous enforcement of federal and state pollution control laws to protect our soil, air, streams and our precious Lake Michigan, Dunes State Park and Indiana Dunes National Park.
We like community parks and tree-planting programs, bike and walking paths and planning communities with transportation infrastructure that helps people get out of their cars and trucks.
It could be a great year coming in 2021, despite the challenges. The NWI Green Party is gearing up for them. Join us.
