A Word From Your NWI Green Party Chair - Joe Conn

Months before I retired in 2017 from a 38-year career in journalism, I was working at Modern Healthcare magazine, where I had covered the business of healthcare  for more than a decade.

I was awash in phone calls and emails from multiple entities hawking Medicare Advantage plans instead of straight Medicare.

In contrast, I received only one phone call from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the administrator of the straight Medicare program, asking me if I needed any help in making a decision about coverage.  By then, I'd already enrolled.

I picked straight Medicare, augmented by private "gap" coverage, and a separate Part D insurance coverage for prescription drugs.

This link (The Backstory Behind the Medicare Advantage Ads) is to a column from a downstate newspaper by a respected fellow healthcare journalist, Judy Lieberman, who writes an opinion column for the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation.  Her writings are distributed to news organizations across the state.  (A local paper published it, too, but has it locked behind a paywall.)

Lieberman warns of the potential pitfalls of the alternative to the coverage I chose, so-called Medicare "Advantage" plans.

The Medicare open enrollment period for 2022 begins Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7.

You might want to read Lieberman before you make a decision if you're nearing retirement and you're thinking about enrolling in Medicare for the first time or, more importantly, if you're already enrolled but are considering your options for next year.
