public comment 2024Greens Speak Against NIPSCO Rate Increase at Hammond Public Hearting

Local advocates attended a public hearing by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission on the proposed $8 a month gas rate increase plus an additional $9 a month fixed charge increase by NIPSCO. NWI Green Party member Rev. Michael Cooper spoke before the Commission saying that this is not the time to be adding additional financial burdens onto the residents of Northwest Indiana. "Recently Portage approved an Amazon data center to be build north of 80/94," stated Rev. Cooper, "where there is plenty of utility infrastructure to meet the high demand of a data center. I am sure that Amazon will be be getting plenty of discounts from NIPSO, yet here we see who is paying for those discounts the residents, the elderly on fixed income and working families; not the multibillion dollar corporations.". The Indiana Utility Regulartory Commission will be voting on the proposal at a future meeting in Indianapolis. Much thanks to our friends at Citizen's Action Coalition for their diligent work keeping an eye on our Indiana utilities.
